Family Photos

Our 2008 vacation at Penny's Beach was without a doubt one of the most relaxing times we've had as a family in years. Rather than spend our days sight seeing and driving up and down the coast, we all agreed that we wanted to play in the sand, splash around in the waves and bask in the sun. I was personally shocked that the boys didn't really even suggest we go anywhere although last year Kento had expressed an interest in visiting the Wright Brothers' Memorial in Kitty Hawk. One day while driving home from Nags Head, we passed the entrance to the memorial and I began to feel guilty that we hadn't stopped there. I guess with all of the hustle and bustle of driving to N.C., they were perfectly content to go back to the beach house and play in the sand. So were we.

Have you noticed the surf fishing rod in top left photo? Three days after our arrival, I purchased and activated a 10-day surf fishing license. What a deal! Kuni had the distinct pleasure of fishing with me this year as my angler caddy for the first few days. Rather than purchase two licenses he "baited" those vile blood worms and cast the line deep into the ocean. With blood splattered hands, he baited one after the other. Several days later when the reeling mechanism malfunctioned, Kuni and the boys drove into town to buy a new spinner but found the reels to be almost as expensive as a new rod, so he purchased a new rod and reel for me. He used the older one. Top right: Those majestic mustangs made their appearance on the beach on two separate occasions. Max, who was snoozing in the tailgate of the Land Rover, happened to see them passing by and with a series of rather loud belly barks, moved them along at a slightly hurried pace. Bottom left and right: The boys and I posed for photos late one morning. We were also trying to avoid being run down and flattened by a motor vehicle traveling in the "beach" driving lane. Please see the trip journal for more detailed information of our days at Penny's Beach.

Early Morning Kento in his shorts. Ready for a day at the beach...

An abundance of sea shells that washed up on the beach after each high tide made for rough walking but provided a treasure trove of both commonly found and oddly shaped shells. Low tide was the perfect time to float around in the water. Large tidal pools were Yoshi and Kento's playgound on many occasions. Kuni gives Maxie a big hug. Yoshi and Kento pose for a photo on the pier in Duck, N.C. after breakfast.
